S.L.U.G Queen (short for Society for the Legitimization of the Ubiquitous Gastropod) is a beauty pageant based in Eugene, Oregon with a focus on rejecting traditional beauty standards. It began in 1983 and is a way to combine local art and culture into one big event. This promo poster purposely contrasts the feminine nature of Art Nouveau with a giant cartoon slug in the middle. Beauty standards often get pigeonholed into one definition that leaves out many people. The S.L.U.G Queen competition takes those and tosses them out the window with a glittery flourish. Each crowned queen is beautiful in a nontraditional way so this design reflects that.
